End Pride Month by listening to Trans Singers

Trans voice work and music therapy around vocal expression can sometimes feel lonely, isolating and overwhelming. Here are some trans singers to remind you that you are not alone and your voice is valuable in the gender spectrum of diverse sounds.

Kae Tempest- is an English rapper and poet who’s melodic voice reflects on many deep inner truths. Kae often speaks in a rhythmic range that sits nicely in the range of pitches that are often perceived as gender neutral. They came out in 2020 but their voice has played with pitch much longer than that.

Cavetown is the music of English singer songwriter Robbin Skinner. Skinner has a folky pop rock feel that plays with gender themes. Similar to lo-if the relaxing tunes bring out a more acoustic sound to the relaxed energy. In addition to being trans, Robbin Skinner is also on the asexual and aromantic spectrums.

Kim Petras sings upbeat pop electronic music that is fun to dance to . The german singer has a bubbly voice that is sure to get you moving.

Shea Diamond is an African American blues and R&B singer songwriter and trans rights activist. Diamond faced discrimination while in the U.S. prison system and has spoken out against the treatment of trans people in the prison system. Diamond has a powerful expressive voice that she uses both to sing beautifully and bring awareness to trans issues.

Lucas Silveira is a Portuguese- Canadian singer songwriter. He is one of the first out transgender men to be signed with a major label. His music is smooth and shifted from folk to rock after he came out. Many of his songs explore gender and he has written articles focused on trans activism.

Lucia Lucas is a trans opera singer. Her baritone voice is smooth and powerful. She is the first out trans woman to sing on an opera stage in the United States.

Teddy Geiger is an American trans woman. Gieger is a singer songwriter and record producer with an alternative rock sound. Geiger has also done some acting.

Skylar Kergil is a singer songwriter and YouTuber. Skylar is a trans activist and has a folk sound. His early music was more punk sounding but as he has transitioned it has gotten much more folk based.

Wolfjay is the music of indie pop producer Jack Alexander. Their airy pop is relaxing and hypnotic.

Ezra Furman is a singer songwriter and both albums and the soundtrack of Sex Education. Furman is a trans woman who uses she/they pronouns. Her Rock is peppy and inspires movement. Furman is Jewish and bisexual.

ANOHNI is a singer songwriter from England. Her music is ethereal electronic pop. With smooth and unusual harmonies ANOHNI is able to captivate her audience. ANOHNI is also a visual artist. She has been nominated for several awards and won the Mercury Prize in 2005 for album of the year.

Mina Caputo- is best known for her singing in the metal band Life of Agony. Caputo took a break from the band to transition and produced solo music for a time before returning to the band.

Jake Zyrus is a philippino singer and has made appearances on several TV shows. Jake has an inspirational pop voice. Among his TV appearances are Glee and Oprah.

Sam Smith is a nonbinary British singer songwriter. Their pop and soul sound has a soaring quality. Smith has won several awards including four Grammy awards.
